New wave Parisian designer Jean-Paul Gaultier debuted in 1976. He loved parody, and in the 1980s took what had traditionally been undergarments, such as the corset and girdle, and transformed then into active outerwear for women, obliterating the negative image of underwear. The same did the avant-garde British designer Vivienne Westwood. The transformation of underwear into outerwear is a major phenomenon of the late twentieth century, originating in the body-conscious movement of the 1980s that emphasized the beauty of a fit, healthy body.
