The corset, probably one of the most lasting piece of clothing, was first recorded in the early 16th century and was very popular until the beginning of the 20th century. The term "corset" though only came into use during the 19th century; before that, such a garment was usually referred to as a pair of bodies, a stiff bodice, a pair of stays or, simply, stays. What you might not know is that women’s corsets were made by men, as strong hands were needed to stitch whalebone into stiff corset material.
